One of the major challenges of large sculptural works has always been to maintain accuracy and scale on big projects. Manual production techniques involve a combination of frantic measurements, slow carving and holding your mouth just right, and even then few sculptures emerge that are perfectly enlarged replicas of models that were a tenth or an even smaller fraction of the size. Because of this, sculptural enlargement on a large scale has generally been considered a perilous undertaking. Sculptures emerge misshapen and then require significant time to laboriously repair, reshape or in the worst case scenario, redo, before they are ready for finishing work and installation.
